weekend update

Well Marta came to town this weekend. Yes, that is the one and only Marta Allen – mi madre. Here are the events that ensued:

  • Martina McBride concert. Those of you who know me well will understand that I'm not a frequent listener of the country music. I do have some Rascal Flatts and Dixie Chicks albums, but I consider them to be "Country Lite". I don't know my local country radio station and I couldn't name the top country hits if you paid me $1M dollars. BUT I do have to say that Martina is fabulous. She is a tiny tiny person (5'2" according to Google) and she's very thin and just altogether a wee person. However she has one of the biggest and most amazing voices. Her vocal control and presence is huge. She also sings about important issues instead of every song belaboring the poor fate of some drunken cheater. Of course she does have the love themed songs that are country music's good old standby but the songs she's obviously the most proud of and passionate about actually make a statement and try to make a difference through her art. And you have to respect that even if you don't particularly agree with her or love the music. People that try to make a difference in this world of indifferent people gain my respect.
  • Running with the DRC. Mom walked and did actually jog a bit. Don't worry though she found time to stop at three garage sales. Gotta love moms!
  • Apartment shopping. You'll be happy to know that I have found my next home! I'm moving on August 22 (I think…can't really remember…need to ask about that) to a little apartment complex right in uptown. It is a one bedroom/one bath and is pretty small but that will be just the right amount of space for little old me. The complex is cozy and has a neighborhood feel since it is on a side street with little traffic. And most importantly it is walking distance to the following amazing locations some are closer than others and some you'd only want to walk to when the temperature is below 90 but walking distance they are just the same:
    • Vanessa's apartment
    • Rachel's apartment
    • KATY TRAIL
    • I Fratelli
    • Starbucks
    • Primos
    • Quarter Bar
    • Breadwinners
    • Frankies
    • Vino 100
    • Palm Beach Tan
    • MAT (McKinney Avenue Tavern)
    • State & Allen Lounge
    • TABC
    • And more!
  • Shopping at the mall. Who knew there were huge sales this weekend? Mom and I found some amazing deals and I was able to get a new suit from Banana for a ridiculous price. LOVE IT!!
  • Rented a movie. "Definitely, Maybe" It's cute – rent it.
  • Walking on the Katy Trail. We had a great walk on the Katy Trail and found out which entrance I'll use from my new apartment. Get excited Rachel!!
  • Good discussions. As with any parent there are times that you are so thankful of everything they've done for you and other times they are driving you so crazy you don't understand how you can spend another minute with them. Luckily I think I drive my mom the same amounts of happy and crazy so we make for a good pair. She's awesome and I hope to be much of the woman she is one day.

Once mom left I caught up on some "real life" activities such as shopping for a shower curtain for my new casa, getting some work done, laundry, and cooking food to take for lunches this week. I lead a very exciting life!
